Pediatric Nursing Respite Services

Providing Compassionate Care for Families with Children and Youth with Medical Complexities

Our Pediatric Nursing Respite Services Program offers essential relief to parents and caregivers of children and youth aged 0–19 with medical complexities. By providing medical respite care, we help families maintain a healthy balance between their caregiving responsibilities and personal well-being, ensuring that children continue to receive the highest quality care within their homes and communities.

How We Help

This community-based program connects families across British Columbia with registered nurses who specialize in supporting children and youth with complex medical needs. We empower families by:

Offering respite care for medical tasks such as medication administration and ongoing medical care, as per the directing physician and medical team.

Supporting families in maintaining family-centered care while giving caregivers time to rest or take a break.

Collaborating with families to develop personalized respite plans tailored to each child’s needs.

Our nurses work closely with parents, guardians, the child, and other healthcare providers to ensure that every family receives the support they need while maintaining the well-being of their child.

Who We Serve

The Pediatric Nursing Respite Program serves children and youth aged 0–19 with medical complexities and their families in their homes or in community. These individuals often face the challenges of managing complex medical care while striving to lead active, fulfilling lives in their communities.

We take a family-centered approach, building trust and fostering supportive relationships with families, children, and community partners. By offering tailored respite care, ongoing support, and training, we help families navigate the demands of caregiving and promote stability and well-being for both children and caregivers.

Eligibility Criteria

The Pediatric Nursing Respite Program is open to children and youth referred by local health authorities and the provincial Nursing Support Services program. To be eligible, the child or youth must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be between 0–19 years of age.
  2. Be referred by Nursing Support Services.
  3. Maintain ongoing eligibility as long as their primary diagnosis remains current.
  4. Reside in British Columbia.
  5. Have a trained family member available when nursing staff are on site.

Key Features of the Program

  • Family-Centered Approach: Families remain the primary caregivers while receiving support from our skilled nurses.
  • Tailored Care Plans: Each family works with our team to create personalized plans based on the unique needs of their child.
  • Holistic Care: Our services are designed to support physical, emotional, and social aspects of caregiving, fostering empowerment and well-being for all involved.

Hours of Service

The number of hours provided through the Pediatric Nursing Respite Program is determined by Nursing Support Services based on the child or youth’s medical needs and the family’s care requirements. However, we understand that every family has unique circumstances, and we are committed to working closely with families to develop a flexible schedule that fits their needs.

Our team will collaborate with families to ensure the respite care hours align with their lifestyle, caregiving responsibilities, and availability. We aim to provide the necessary support while also respecting the family’s preferences and routines.

Whether the need is for regular respite care or occasional support, we will tailor the schedule to ensure families have access to the relief they require, helping to balance caregiving with personal well-being.
